Designing a Reliable Off-Grid Apartment Solar System with Fox Technology

In Cape Town’s ever-evolving energy landscape, one development is quietly setting a new benchmark. A 43-unit apartment complex is now running entirely off-grid, thanks to an expertly designed and executed off-grid apartment solar system by Trust Solar — using the robust and reliable Fox ESS hybrid inverter technology.

When construction began, the property had no Eskom connection. Rather than delay the project, the developers partnered with Trust Solar to install an initial solar setup to power the building phase itself. What started with a single Fox inverter and four batteries quickly evolved into a high-performance, off-grid system built to power the entire complex permanently.

Now featuring Fox 30kW hybrid inverters (H3-Pro) in parallel, a 160kWh battery bank, and 88kW of PV panels, the system is producing more than enough energy to power tenant appliances, geysers, and even stoves — despite Cape Town’s dark winters.

Even during rainy spells, the system’s storage capacity ensures reliability. For added assurance, a backup generator was integrated, but impressively, it has only had to run a handful of times in three months. This speaks to the efficiency and foresight of the solar design.

The project isn’t just a technical success — it’s also an attractive business case. With consistent and stable electricity supply, the building owner is now able to resell energy through a prepaid solar billing mechanism developed by Trust Solar. In fact, there’s serious consideration to never connecting to the municipal grid at all, given the cost savings and long-term energy independence this model offers.
