Applying for small-scale embedded or solar generation
If you are supplied with electricity by the City of Cape Town and would like to connect a small-scale embedded generator to the City’s electricity grid then, in terms of the Electricity By-law, you need to receive written authorisation to do so.
How to apply
To obtain written authorisation to connect a small-scale embedded generator (SSEG) to the City’s electricity grid you will need to consult our regulation guideline. This process only applies to generators located within the City’s area of supply. Customers connected to Eskom must obtain authority from that organisation.
The approval process for an SSEG installation in the City varies depending on the size of the system and whether you are a resident or a business. All applicants wanting to operate a system capacity of less than 1 MVA (1000 kVA) can make an application by filling out the form in the documents download section below, and following the application process set out in our Requirements for Small-scale Embedded Generation.
If you want to operate a generator system larger than 1 MVA, a meeting should be arranged with the City in order to establish whether this would be allowed and whether any special requirements are needed.
